In January of 2015 while on a routine visit to her dentist, Dr. Judy Plummer Beale was introduced to the alternative health benefits of essential oils. Judy had complained of a bad headache that day at the dentist office. Instead of giving her a couple of aspirin, her dentist asked if she had ever tried using a therapeutic essential oil to relieve her stress and tension headache. Of course, Judy had no idea what a therapeutic essential oil was but she was open to the idea.
Her dentist explained that an essential oil was the fragrant essence of a plant. “These highly concentrated liquid oils,“ he explained, “are the foundation of aromatherapy, which is based on the idea that the aromatic oil from a plant has healing properties.”
“If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils,” he said. “These naturally occurring, aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants,” he continued. “They not only help protect the plant in nature but can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant.”
The dentist explained that in addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and, more importantly, health benefits. He pointed out that essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. He explained that unlike pain relievers that are commonly used to treat headaches and migraines today, essential oils serve as a more effective and safer alternative. He also told Judy that he was even using a diffuser to scent his office with a Lavender essential oil scent which he believed promoted a sense of well-being by inducing relaxation, anti-anxiety, and a general calming effect on his patients.
A skeptic by nature, Judy, nevertheless, allowed the dentist to apply a Peppermint essential oil blend topically across her forehead and on her temple. It created an immediate cooling effect and sensation. To her surprise, the minted aroma seemed to have a muscle-soothing and mentally relaxing effect that worked to mitigate her headache after just a few minutes. Given the quick effect, Judy was fascinated by the perceived benefit of this Peppermint essential oil blend. She asked her dentist what specifically makes an essential oil blend like this so effective.
“What makes an essential oil effective,” he answered, “are the physical and chemical properties of the aromatic compounds that compose essential oils. This allows them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the body through the olfactory receptors in your nose. Such unique properties make essential oils ideal for applications in aromatherapy – using these aromatic compounds from plants can definitely help maintain a healthy mind and body,” he insisted. Finally, he noted, "The type of aromatic compounds present in an essential oil determines both the oil’s aroma and the benefits it offers.”
Judy was intrigued. After leaving the dentist office that day, she began researching the subject of essential oils and aromatherapy. She quickly learned that there were a multitude of therapeutic applications based on aromatherapy and essential oils. As her dentist had indicated, she also learned that this was an ancient craft that was part art, part science and part magical; she discovered that the blending of essential oils, the mixing of rare herbs, and the composition of incense had been used by people for millennia to create aromatherapeutic substances to effect positive changes in their lives. She learned that our ancestors had used special herbs and oils to create a vast variety of potent substances — from precious herbal ointments secreted within crystal jars that were rubbed onto the body to effect magical transformations; to fragrant barks and woods that were thrown onto hot coals to release their aromatic scents and healing powers; to symbolic pendants infused with pure herbal essential oils that were worn around the neck of the receiver in order to ward off illness, negativity, and evil forces while amplifying the positive life energies of health, protection, passion, and peace of mind.
As she dug deeper into the mythology of essential oils and aromatherapy, she remembered an old bedtime story her father had once told her when she was a young child about an Irish goddess and seven special pendants infused with the aromatic scents of a magical herbal blend called, “Anjaca.” According to the bedtime tale, nearly 1000 years ago, the Irish Druid Goddess, Brigid, (the patroness of medicine, healing, and the arrival of spring) formulated a very powerful herbal blend and gave it to a local village priestess named Iona. Iona had called upon Brighid to help protect her family from a deadly illness ravaging the Irish countryside brought on by the war with the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf. This special herbal blend was made from the constituents of three important organic plant materials; Anise, Jasmine and Cassia essential oils - its name, "Anjaca," coming from the first two letters of each of the plants. Anjaca was a particularly powerful blend because Brigid had infused it with special empowerment properties including mental focus, protection, confidence, wellness, and healing.
Brigid also gave Iona seven magical pendants each with a different emblematic design and corresponding life energy. These were the “Seven Incanted Pendants of Empowerment” which included the Guardian, Wellness, Passion, Prosperity, Vitality, Power, and Happiness pendants. Brigid told Iona that wearing both the Guardian and Wellness pendants, each infused with the Anjaca blend, would help protect the wearer against illness as well as from physical and emotional harm. Iona had the local village metalsmith make meticulous copies of the pendants and gave both the Guardian and Wellness pendants infused with the Anjaca blend to her three children and her husband who were not only protected from the Viking incursion and impending chaos but who were also miraculously spared any ill effects of the deathly sickness that ultimately befell her village.
Judy really liked this bedtime story and its emphasis on the belief that while spirituality was important, feeling strong, capable, and healthy was essential too. Judy also quickly realized that she really loved the idea of mixing the aromatherapeutic benefits of essential oils with wearing finely crafted symbolic jewelry. Needless to say, before she knew it, she began focusing on a whole new direction and passion - to create high quality, aromatherapeutic jewelry for women, men and children that not only looked good but that could also provide a sense of well being and promote a healthy lifestyle as well. In this way, she is promoting a whole new jewelry trend that she calls, “Wearable Wellness Fashion.” Anjaca is her lifestyle accessories brand and it was created to not only inspire other women who are trying to balance the chaos of life while practicing a healthy lifestyle, but to promote emotional, physical, and spiritual well being through the simple elegance of finely crafted lifescent jewelry.
In today’s world, there are those who may be skeptical of the notion that the use of herbal aromatherapy and scented oils can enrich our lives; but recent research into herbal-based scents has proven that they do, in fact, have powerful effects on human behavior and health, and scientists and the medical profession are now working on ways to unlock these herbal properties for the well-being of the general public. Along these lines, Anjaca has created a line of truly elegant diffuser pendants that not only makes you look and feel beautiful but also inspires you to feel good while enjoying the healthy benefits of aromatherapy wherever you go. Beauty, aroma, and significance are three key elements that go into each Anjaca wearable wellness pendant. Each Anjaca design tells a story that relates to a belief in both a spiritual and symbolic purpose, sometimes universal and sometimes very specific in nature. We welcome you to peruse our line of high quality diffuser jewelry and let us know what you think.
