Essential oils and aromatherapy are a vital part of daily living for many people. Diffuser jewelry is a great way to enjoy the many benefits of aromatherapy without going to the spa, or having to allocate a dedicated space in your home to do so. However, essential oils do come with some explicit warnings that should be taken very seriously.
Essential oils can be harmful if used topically, and especially if not diluted properly. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant essences that can cause severe irritation in some individuals. Some oils, such as citrus oils, are highly phototoxic. This means that any exposure to the sun after a topical application can burn and blister your skin, and may cause permanent scarring. Always heed safe dilution ratios and read all warnings that accompany each essential oil in order to stay safe.
Ingesting essential oils is never recommended, unless under the guidance of a qualified practitioner who is trained and certified in aromatherapy using essential oils. Though many oils are used in culinary practice, a few drops in a larger volume of sauce, food or beverage is not going to harm you. However, ingesting essential oils undiluted, such as many people do with oil of oregano, for example, can be damaging to the immune system, caustic to your internal systems and sometimes even toxic. Always consult a professional before going down this road, no matter how much you think you know.
Please note that we suggest educating yourself on the safety issues of EO ingestion and the various essential oil choices and their proper usage.
Essential oils used in diffuser jewelry are a safe way of getting all the benefits of essential oils without the danger of causing harm to your skin or your innards. When used in diffuser jewelry, the essential oil is applied to a felt, fabric or leather pad that is encapsulated within a locket. The locket hangs on a necklace, brooch or bracelet. You will generally only use a couple of drops of essential oil at a time, and depending on the oil, this may last for several days. The only immediate danger is during the application process, when some of the essential oil may come in direct contact with your skin. If this happens, wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water.
If you are concerned about coming into direct contact with the oil, try not to handle the diffuser pad directly. Apply the essential oil straight from the dropper bottle, and handle the pad with tweezers or while wearing rubber gloves. Be sure to wash the gloves or tweezers thoroughly to avoid any later erosion that might be caused by contact with the oil.
If the locket, the chain or any part of the jewelry becomes coated with essential oil, wash the piece in soapy water until all residue is removed. If there is any danger of the oil coming in direct contact with your skin, make sure you wipe it away or wash it well before putting on your diffuser jewelry. Even if you don’t have sensitive skin and are not prone to rashes, undiluted essential oil has potential to cause great harm.
In terms of the safety of diffuser jewelry itself, if used properly and mindfully, it should actually mitigate any potential risks. The diffuser pad is secured inside a closed locket, and there is a metal backing that keeps the pad away from your skin. It should be mentioned, though, that not all diffuser jewelry is created alike.
